Stolen jewellery worth thousands

JEWELLERY worth thousands of pounds was stolen from a family-run Ledbury store during a smash and grab raid in broad daylight. Callous thieves drove a white van up on to the pavement outside Past and Present before using a hammer to smash through the business’ reinforced glass window.
After reaching through and grabbing stock from inside the Homend store they sped off through the town. The van was discovered abandoned and ablaze in Ballard Close a short while later. Past and Present’s owners Annette and Steve Crowe were left shaken by the theft, which took place at about noon on Wednesday, but have vowed to fight back from the incident.
Good to their word they were open for business again on Thursday morning, albeit with the front of the store boarded up. “We are only a small shop and this is our livelihood, so we were determined to re-open as soon as possible,” said Mrs Crowe. “What has happened is just unbelievable. We are both very shaken as you just don’t expect something like this in Ledbury, which is generally a very safe environment.
“But we will not let them beat us. We are made of sterner stuff in Ledbury.” Although the stock taken will run to thousands of pounds, Mrs Crowe said it could have been a lot worse were it not for the actions of her husband, who was in the shop at the time and leapt into action to pull much of the stock back away from the window.
“I think that I would just have frozen, but Steve was amazing,” she said. “The losses will still add up to thousands of pounds but thankfully are only a fraction of what we have in stock. It is the best outcome from a worse case scenario.”
