Every once in awhile, North Carolinians are reminded that buried treasure lies all around us, and it's not Blackbeard the pirate's. The state is rich in minerals of many types, from high-volume industrial materials such as phosphate rock (we're No. 2 in the U.S.) and mica (No. 1) to the rarest of gemstones.

Carolina facet

Farm Gives Up Emerald Fit For An Empress

September 1, 2010 |20:38 | Gems Stones  By : Team X

Farm Gives Up Emerald Fit For An EmpressFarm Gives Up Emerald Fit For An Empress: An emerald so large it's being compared with the crown jewels of Russian empress Catherine the Great was pulled from a pit near corn rows at a North Carolina farm. The nearly 65-carat emerald, called the Carolina Emporer, was pulled from a farm once so well known among treasure hunters that the owners charged US$3 ($4.20) a day to shovel for small samples of the green stones.

After the gem was cut and re-cut, the finished product was about one-fifth the weight of the original find, making it slightly larger than a US25 cent coin and about as heavy as an AA battery.

Featured Garnet

August 2, 2010 |13:06 | Gems Stones  By : Team X

This unusual pyrope-spessartite garnet is the latest in beautiful and rare gem materials to be unearthed from the Lindi Province of southeastern Tanzania. What makes this particular stone so special is its size. Marketed as “imperial” garnet, it is reported that most such material suitable for cutting is rarely over one carat in size, and inclusions are common.

This incredible “gem” weighs 57.12 carats and has an amazing, intensely saturated combination of rich orange with a crisp pink secondary that indeed gives it a color similar to fine imperial topaz. The clarity is exceptional and the cutting is superb.

Gemstones – Emerging Rivals Of Diamondsforever" is a relatively new marketing punch line created by a diamond company, colored gemstones have actually been parts of human civilization since forever.  There have been traces of gemstone usage from early human history with mention of gemstones in the holy Bible also. The emperors and royals of ancient ages had special affiliation to colored gemstones. Ancient cultures across the world sanctified colored gemstones and associated different beliefs and mysticism to gemstones. Recently colored gemstones have made a dramatic comeback with colored gemstones like ruby, emerald, sapphire, aquamarine, tanzanite, amethyst and many more dominating the runways, fashion circles, red carpet and of course our jewelry boxes.
