Dazzling Designs Add Sparkle to Exhibition Imperishable Beauty Art Nouveau Jewelry

July 23, 2008 |15:39 | Gems Jewelry   By : Team X

BOSTON.- Called “a new, imperishable beauty” by artist and architect Henry van de Velde, the Art Nouveau movement at the turn of the 20th century found its fullest expression in the decorative arts, and a new type of jewelry design flourished that preserved the beauty found in nature. More than 100 of these dazzling miniature works of art are featured in Imperishable Beauty: Art Nouveau Jewelry, organized by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA), where it is on view July 23 through November 9, 2008.

The majority of the works, by such recognized masters as René Lalique, George Fouquet, and Louis Comfort Tiffany, are drawn from a private collection representing one of the largest and most important assemblages of Art Nouveau jewelry in the United States; more than half of the pieces have never before been exhibited. Included are such fanciful works as Belt buckle with lily pads and blossoms by Henri Vever and Pendant/brooch with female bust, probably by Louis Aucoc, both of which are from about 1900.

Upscale U.S. chain buys Hudson's Bay

Hudson's Bay Co., Canada's oldest retailer, has been acquired by an American investor behind the surprising turnaround of Lord & Taylor in a deal that combines North America's two oldest department stores into the same corporate structure.

Lord & Taylor will launch 10 to 15 stores throughout Canada in moderate income areas that currently house the Bay, Zellers or Home Outfitters locations. In the new regime, HBC will see an infusion of retailing talent back into the ranks of upper management - all American - and will once again see the Bay and Zellers units run by separate chief executives.

"We realized there was a tremendous opportunity to bring world-class retail experience to the HBC organization," said Richard Baker, principal of the acquisition group, NRDC Equity Partners of Purchase, N.Y., which had a 20 per cent stake in the company prior to the deal.

Minerals, gems and fossils are in the spotlight this weekend in Ventura at the 69th annual tri-state convention and show of the California Federation of Mineralogical Societies.

The extensive displays on view at the Ventura County Fairgrounds were collected by enthusiasts from across California, Nevada and Arizona and include jewelry, polished stones and fossils for sale by dealers.

Courtney Coleman, 11, and her 9-year-old brother Tyler, are members of Mineral Mites, a rock club for kids in Bakersfield that meets every month.

"We came here today to get more rocks for their collection," said their mom, Lori Coleman.

Twelve-year-old Shawn Fenerin from Moorpark arrived with his dad Mike.

"I like to see all different kinds of rocks and gems," Shawn said. "The color or the shape of it and its texture is what's interesting."

Jim Brace-Thompson is secretary for the California Federation and in charge of junior activities for both that group and the American Federation of Mineralogical Societies, which are nonprofit educational organizations. He also helps run the Ventura and Oxnard chapters of the society, which have about 150 members between them.

"This is a statewide show and is held once a year," said Brace-Thompson, who works as an acquisitions editor at Sage Publications in Thousand Oaks.

Trends: Addicted to Accessories!

June 17, 2008 |18:34 | Gems Jewelry   By : Team X

I have, I must admit, a bit of a jewelry addiction. I’m like a cat with a little bell around my neck - my friends can always tell exactly where I am at any given time due to excessive charms and bangles jingle jangling. Despite said addiction, I rarely buy into jewelry trends or invest in new styles, preferring my eclectic collection of hand-me downs, charms from my travels and vintage gems.

I have been, however, entirely seduced my A/W’s very grown-up and elaborately jeweled trend. A clear reaction to summer’s light-as-air ethereal aesthetic, these serious jewels go hand in hand with new tailoring, structure and twisted Sunday- Best dressing (as seen at Prada, YSL and Balenciaga to name but a few).

A spokesman for RUSSELL SIMMONS has denied reports the hip-hop mogul has had $15,000 (GBP7,500)-worth of jewellery stolen, insisting it was one of his New York employees who was the unfortunate victim of thieves.

The unnamed worker had a suitcase of jewels - including three diamond rings, a pendant, three sets of earrings and two bracelets from the Simmons Jewelry Company - taken from the hallway of an apartment on Bleecker Street on Saturday (07Jun08).

A source tells the New York Post's gossip column PageSix, "Crime-scene investigators were swarming the area."

New York City police have confirmed they are investigating a theft.

Initial reports claimed Simmons had been targetted by the assailants, but the rap entrepreneur's representative claims the jewels belonged to the employee.

Christie's Sells 101-Carat Diamond at HK$48.5 Million

May 29, 2008 |17:15 | Gems Jewelry   By : Team X

A 101-carat, near-flawless diamond sold for HK$48.5 million ($6.2 million) at a Christie's International sale in Hong Kong, propelling the city past Geneva and New York as the auction house's biggest jewelry market.

The diamond, the highlight of Christie's jewelry sale, has the third-highest clarity rating of VVS1 and the third-best ranking on a scale used to measure colorlessness. The stone, the size of a quail's egg, had a presale high estimate of $8 million. Christie's sale of 258 gems, among 345 offered, fetched about $60 million, compared with $49 million from its New York auction and $56 million in Geneva, London-based Christie's said.

``More than other regions, the Asian client is interested in the perfect stone,'' said Francois Curiel, the company's global head of jewelry, in an interview. ``Gem size matters in America. Here, small and extremely good quality work.''
