 HE'S always had a passion for precious stones. Keith Henderson of Riverhead will be in his element at New Zealand's largest Gem, Mineral and Fossil Show. The event is in Auckland for the first time at West Wave in Henderson from September 3 to 5. It is hosted by the North Shore Rockhounds Club.

Visitors from around the country and overseas can view displays of national and international gems, dinosaur eggs and handcrafted jewellery. A highlight is a range of enlarged photos of micro-gems and crystals which can only be seen by using microscopic cameras.

Farm Gives Up Emerald Fit For An EmpressFarm Gives Up Emerald Fit For An Empress: An emerald so large it's being compared with the crown jewels of Russian empress Catherine the Great was pulled from a pit near corn rows at a North Carolina farm. The nearly 65-carat emerald, called the Carolina Emporer, was pulled from a farm once so well known among treasure hunters that the owners charged US$3 ($4.20) a day to shovel for small samples of the green stones.

After the gem was cut and re-cut, the finished product was about one-fifth the weight of the original find, making it slightly larger than a US25 cent coin and about as heavy as an AA battery.

What makes this particular stone so special is its size. Marketed as “imperial” garnet, it is reported that most such material suitable for cutting is rarely over one carat in size, and inclusions are common.

This incredible “gem” weighs 57.12 carats and has an amazing, intensely saturated combination of rich orange with a crisp pink secondary that indeed gives it a color similar to fine imperial topaz. The clarity is exceptional and the cutting is superb.

Supply cramps may push diamond prices up 15-20%

Rough and polished diamond prices are likely to rise by another 15-20 per cent this year due to lack of supply and rising demand from consumers in emerging markets. Diamond prices fell about 30 per cent last year and had recovered by almost 15 per cent this year.

Further recovery is imminent by the end of this year, said Mehul Choksi, chairman of Gitanjali Gems , a leading jewellery manufacturer and retailer, on the sidelines of a seminar organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry in Mumbai [ Images ] on Monday.

Christie’s spokeswoman Clare Roberts said Umm Kulthoum received this nine-row necklace from Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan in 1970s. Born in 1904, Umm learnt singing from her father and debuted her first footage in the mid-1920s and by 1930s; she reached the top of Cairo’s composition panorama.

Jewellery Recycling.This is a wonderfully simple way to raise money for Open Arms at the same time as recycling unwanted jewellery. Everybody has old and discarded jewellery and most people would be happy to see these items recycled.

Jewelleryrecycling.org allows you to do just that, at no cost to yourself and very little effort. Absolutely any unwanted jewellery is taken, including odd earrings, broken chains or watches, and costume jewellery.

How does it work: Collection envelopes are provided to collect the jewellery in. The envelopes are FREEPOST envelopes, so you don't even have to pay the postage.

Once you have collected the jewellery to be recycled, send the filled envelopes off, and the experts at jewelleryrecycling.org will then sort through the items and arrange for them to be recycled.
