The Logan Sapphire is a deep blue sapphire and, at 423 carats, it is the second largest blue sapphire in the world. The cushion-cut is set in a brooch surrounded by 20 round brilliant cut diamonds weighing 16 carats in total. The Logan Sapphire is named after Mrs. John Logan, who donated the gemstone to the Smithsonian Institution in 1960.

XCAP Securities has restarted coverage of Richland Resources (LON:RLD) with a ‘buy’ rating and a 19 pence price target. The group currently trades at 9.62 pence.

Analyst Sam Brindle believes the group, one of the world’s foremost mine to market producers of coloured gemstones, has weathered the storm of the recent financial crisis and looks set to diversify its mineral portfolio.

“With its flagship Merelani tanzanite mine (in Tanzania) once again generating positive cash flows, the strategy to diversify into complimentary minerals is set to be the key to extracting value for investors,” he said.

Richland has an option to acquire an Australian sapphire project until the end of April and has plans to mine Tsavorite, a green emerald-like stone, near its flagship project.

Like much of the luxury goods market and gemstone producers in particular, Richland was battered by the financial crisis as prices for precious stones collapsed across the board during 2008 and 2009, Brindle said.

After paring costs and fine tuning operations the company returned to profitability in 2010. Following a name change and further restructuring it is now well positioned to build on these gains and capitalise on a recovery in the gemstone market, he believes.
 
According to the analyst, either of the potential new projects could prove to be a game changer for Richland which has historically been a one mine one mineral company.

“We value Richland on a 20 year life-of-mine discounted free cash flow basis for its wholly owned Merelani mine. Our base case scenario conservatively values the company at a net present value of US$33.9 million, with a 12-month price target of 19 pence and we reinitiate coverage with a BUY recommendation,” Brindle added.

The event, organised by Pakistan Gems and Jewellery Development Company, was the second annual exhibit and aimed to provide a platform and exposure to Pakistani gemstones and mineral traders to improve their trade, and to promote their products before the international community, including embassies, consulates, and international organisations.

The event was inaugurated by Senator Semeen Siddiqi and Ministry of Production Secretary Gul Muhammad Rind. Traders and companies from Gilgit, Peshawar, Karachi, Lahore and elsewhere set up stalls to promote their product ranges.

The dazzling variety of precious and semiprecious stones covering every inch of the hall were a sight to see: rubies from Africa, tourmaline from Skardu, diamonds from India  and religious stones such as Sulemani Aqeeq from Iran were all glistening under spotlights as people browsed through the options available while moving from stall to stall. Staffers at each stall had put their best gems forward and were confident that they had the best jewellery in the hall.

“I can guarantee that even if you look at every stall here, you won’t find designs like mine,” stated Mohammad Zeeshan, a gemmologist and designer from Karachi.  Many diplomatic and foreign workers could be seen mingling at the event, as they tried to bargain with multiple jewellers, each with a “special” price to offer.
“I am fascinated by stones and am an avid collector. This is an opportunity I couldn’t miss!” said Sarah, an enthusiastic guest from Canada. The fact that the gems and jewellery were being sold at wholesale prices instead of market price actually added to buyers’ enthusiasm. “This is probably the only time I will consider buying sapphire stones,” stated a local resident.

Pakistan being blessed with vast natural resources of precious as well as semi precious stones in its mountains with international quality is an advantage that should be handled properly. Such an exhibition highlights the local resources available here, and as one trader from Skardu proudly stated, “I only deal with stones that can be found in our mountains. Why deal with any other stones when we have so much under our feet?”

India possesses world's most competitive gems and jewellery market owing to its low cost of production and availability of skilled labour. Gems and jewellery form an essential part of the Indian tradition. The components of jewellery include traditional gold, diamond and platinum, accompanied by a variety of other precious and semi-precious stones.

The Indian gems and jewellery sector is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 13 per cent during 2011–2013, on the back of increasing Government efforts and incentives together with private sector initiatives, according to a report 'Indian Gems and Jewellery Market Forecast to 2013', by research firm RNCOS. As per the research report, with India's consumption pegged at nearly 24 per cent in 2008, the country remains world's largest gold consumer and this share is expected to grow further. Moreover, India also forms the largest cutting and polishing Industry for diamond in the world. The Government policies and the banking sector have provided a lot of assistance to this sector with around 50 banks providing nearly US$ 3 billion of credit to the Indian diamond industry.

India will soon overtake the US to become the third-largest men's luxury jewellery market in the world, according to Euromonitor International. The study estimated that the country's men's jewellery market stood at around Rs 954 crore (US$ 194.4 million), in sales and it is projected to grow by 36.4 per cent in 2012. "Although it's a niche market, it is growing. Nobody can ignore it now," as per GR Radhakrishnan, Managing Director, GRT Jewellers, who pegs the share of men's jewellery in its total sales at 20-25 per cent.

Indian sellers on eBay, a leading online marketplace, export an item internationally every 32 seconds, according to the company's Asian exporters' index. 44 pieces of jewellery are sold every hour by Indian sellers on eBay.

Ratings agency CRISIL has launched a Gold Index to track the performance of gold prices in the Indian market. This is the first index launched by CRISIL in the commodities space. The purpose of the CRISIL Gold index is to provide an independent, relevant and common benchmark for performance evaluation of investment products with gold as underlying investment, according to a release from CRISIL.

"In the last 3- 4 years, a lot of Indians are investing in gold which is in the paper format. People should take a long-term perspective while investing in gold. ETFs as a concept is picking up," as per Jiju Vidyadharan, Head, Funds and Fixed Income Research, CRISIL Research.

The gems and jewellery industry in India is greatly dominated by the unorganised players, but with the growing economy and increasing income levels, the organised segment and retailing of branded jewellery is fast catching up in the currently fragmented market which is worth US$ 16 billion and shows huge potential for growth in the future. The current global costume jewellery and accessories market is estimated at US$ 16.3 billion, of which India only exports around US$ 53 million, thereby, providing a huge opportunity area for the Indian costume manufacturers.

Exports
India is the largest market for gold jewellery in the world, representing an amazing 746 tonnes of gold in 2010. The net exports of gem and jewellery grew from US$ 22,616.35 in April-October 2010 to US$ 26,160.04 in April-October 2011.
