On Aug. 26, 24 students visited the Caring Collection residential studio of Bobbie Burnett. They spent several days at a camp preceding their entry into the University of Maryland having experiences that would encourage them to be not only top students but community-oriented individuals.
At the stained glass studio, they worked beside the regular volunteers creating mosaic angels and completing a mailing of invitations for the organization's Fall Sale and Reception on Nov. 5 and 6.
A goal of the Gemstone program, which is designed for top academic students, is to encourage them to be involved in art, music and other community activities while attending classes. The Volunteer Center for Anne Arundel County under the direction of Fay Mauro directs opportunties for students to help in this area.
Since the Caring Collection provides equipment to benefit oncology patients at Johns Hopkins and Anne Arundel Medical Center, the Gemstone students are great asset to the program. It is a wonderful opportunity for college students and volunteers of all ages to learn from one another while working together.
